Post Independence, the Tea Board of India began promoting chai at the Resham Bhavan, Churchgate. In time, this evolved into a spacious restaurant – with a feel of a colonial tea room. From the silver bells to summon the waiters, live piano on Thursday evenings, and soothing interiors, Tea Centre has become a regular stop for chai aficionados.
Sample ingenious tea preparations such as Qahwa (perennial fave!), Hot Buttered Apple Tea (mild concoction with lemon rind, apple juice and dollops of butter), etc. Tea Centre also boasts of a Tea Bazaar. The food is mostly average. Visit it to test the nuances of the humble chai and soak in the calming, colonial ambience – at a price.
