The Mavlas or the soldiers of Shivaji Maharaj were quite accustomed to periodic visits by the Maratha Warrior who enjoyed having his meals with them. “With respect to this camaraderie between king and soldier, the restaurant Mard Mavla is set up,†informs the owner.
The exteriors of this 25-30 seater restaurant are inviting with lanterns, dhol, earthen pots and flour mill kept at the entrance. The walls are painted in old village style and decorated with Shivaji’s war paintings. The non AC section has better ambience than the AC one where remixed versions of Lavanis are played.
The food served is Maharashtrian/Konkan food and is authentic to the core. A fish thali costs around 125 bucks and comes with crispy surmai fry and kolambi curry. The chicken sukhe has the typical Gomantak flavour and is high on spice quotient. Make sure that you reach early or the restaurant might run out of the bhakri (chapattis made of rice flour). The veg thali is served on a banana leaf with dal, usal, green bhaji, aloo bhaji, koshimbir, chutney and a sweet dish adorning the thin sliver of green.
Do not ignore the digestive powers of a glass of sol kadhi in the end.
Was searching for a good Maharshtrian food joint in Goregaon. My search ended at Mard Mavla. the food is purely authentic and the decor very traditional. I loved the Chicken Sukka there. Will keep visiting there often
