A gallery within a café within a 20th century barn – there’s nothing vanilla about Kala Ghoda Café.
Slathered in whitewash, wood and glass, the twin-level café extends its brick walls as a display for photo prints downstairs. A precarious staircase leads to a vantage point upstairs, where comfortable seating offers a bird’s-eye view and a touch of privacy. At the counter below, excellent mava muffins, ginger biscuits and chocolate-walnut discs sit in big glass bottles, pleading to be dunked in organic tea. The organic coffee comes with a little chocolate square, while the egg sandwiches are stuffed with alfalfa sprouts and very delicious. Unrefined sugar and crumbled brown jaggery are placed on each table.
It’s a tight menu, with a few fresh salads, sandwiches, desserts and breakfast variants. Their wholegrain bread is amongst the tastiest we’ve broken in the city. The staff is occasionally slow and confounded. Pricing is moderate.
Proprietor Farhad Bomanjee encourages sustainable, organic fare and alternate forms of transport. He has fitted two bicycle locking services outside the café and offers free coffee on Sundays to passing cyclists. Finally, a café with conscience, character and class.
