Strolling past the striking carnelian-red Bombay Samachar building, one comes across Apoorva, a Mangalorean seafood restaurant-cum-bar. The twin-levelled eatery offers air-conditioned comfort on the first floor. Unlike most of the seafood bars dotting the streets of Fort, this one’s brightly lit, steering clear of the ‘dingy bar vibe’.
The food is rustic Mangalorean fare, with fluffy neer dosas, excellent coconut gassis and handsome portions of fried fish. The chicken stew or mutton sukka with appams is a speciality. Take a detour off the beaten path and sample the unusual dishes like the shellfish curry, red parboiled rice and fried kane fish. The menu for Chinese and Indian fare is extensive. It makes sense to order chicken kebabs and butter garlic prawns as a good accompaniment to alcohol. However, the purists stick to the authentic Mangalorean fare and are not disappointed.
