| WhereCity Review |
Matunga is Mumbai’s South Indian turf. The markets are filled with bananas of unimaginable shapes and sizes, the streets are lined with towering temples and the dosas are thankfully authentic.
A few paces away from the formidable Kochu Guruvayoor Temple lies Amba Bhavan, a no-frills joint serving vegetarian, South Indian fare since 1934. While not enjoying the status of Café Mysore or Café Madras, this little restaurant has its selling points, notably the dosas, rasam vadas, special sheera and filter ‘kaapi’ in a steel tumbler. Ask for a portion of molagapodi (the famous South Indian gunpowder masala) that costs INR 4! All dishes are priced below INR 35 and most are of the breakfast and snack variety. Purchase the crunchy chaklis on your way out.
