Thor is an action-packed adventure made more impactful in 3D.
Based on the Marvel comic by the same name, Thor is the story of arrogant Thor (Chris Hemsworth), the God of Thunder and prince of Asgard. Just as his father King Odin (Anthony Hopkins) is about to declare him king, their Asgard’s the Frost Giants break into the weapons chamber. On the urging of his bother Loki, an enraged Thor visits their kingdom Jotunheim and threats war. This angers Odin who has strived to maintain peace. He banishes Thor to earth along with his trusted weapon the hammer Mjolnir. Thor crash lands into scientist Jane Foster’s (Natalie Portman) research centre in the desert of New Mexico. He struggles with his time on Earth and longs to go back to his home where his brother is wreaking havoc.
Right from the first frame to the end, Thor is a movie experience that comic book and sci-fi fans will love. It opens with the sequence of Jane and her team chasing a storm and then blends in to the opulent Asgard with its towering gold structures and complicated route to the king’s place. The action then shifts to Jotunheim the abode of the Frost Giants which is cold and dreary. This is a sweeping visual journey that has you panting like you’ve actually made that trek. The visual effects team has put in much appreciated effort to make the fight sequences believable yet enjoyable. The final battle with its highs and lows does not disappoint.
However, the makers should have given the relationship between characters, especially Thor’s friendship with Jane, more layers. The writers and director Kenneth Branagh got so caught up in the awesome special effects that they hoped the audience would forget the emotional connect between characters.
Yet, if a fast-paced adventure is what you are looking for, Thor is your best bet.
